Recently, the National Competitiveness Council (NCC) announced the results of the 2014 Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI), an annual ranking of Philippine cities and municipalities developed by the National Competitiveness Council through the Regional Competitiveness Committees (RCCs) with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

CMCI measures competitiveness at the local government level using 28 indicators grouped into three equally-weighted pillars: Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, and Infrastructure. Overall scores used to rank cities and municipalities were derived from the combined scores of each pillar.

Featuring a record number of 136 cities and 399 municipalities, up from 122 cities and 163 municipalities in the previous year, Makati City was ranked as the most competitive city overall, followed by Cagayan de Oro (Misamis Oriental), and Naga (Camarines Sur). For municipalities, Daet (Camarines Norte) ranked first with General Trias (Cavite) and Kalibo (Aklan) on the second and third spot respectively.

The top three most competitive cities and municipalities for each category for 2014 NCC report also received corresponding awards.

The 2014 CMCI report will certainly provide a positive outlook especially to the top ranking cities and municipalities as this will attract more businessmen and investors to explore their respective locations and eventually create jobs for their constituents.
