The Social Security System (SSS) is one of the government’s security arms as part of the social legislation of the country. To shield employees from various contingencies like sickness, disability, death, among others, SSS provides extensive protection pursuant to the mandate of its charter. In fact, female employees are also assured of their maternity benefits with the SSS.
The coverage of SSS is compulsory in nature upon all employees not over sixty (60) years of age and their employers. Filipinos who are recruited in the Philippines by foreign-based employers for employment abroad may also be covered by the SSS on a voluntary basis.
With the SSS’ mandatory rules, registration with this agency also becomes a must for every employer in the private sector. Registration with the SSS entails a lot of familiarity. This agency holds its own specified guidelines and documentary requirements for enrollment.
In order for an employer to obtain an employer number, the following must be submitted:
- Articles of Incorporation, By-Laws and Certificate of Registration with the Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) or the Certificate of Registration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as applicable;
- A duly filled-out form (Form R1-A) with the list of Employees, specifying their birth dates, positions, monthly salary and date of employment; and
- A duly filled-out Specimen Signature Card (SSS Form L-501) indicating the name and official capacity of the person granting authority.
Upon submission of these documents, the employer number is released after one week, unless otherwise specified by the Accounts Officer.
